UAE to Introduce Sugar-Based Excise Tax on Sweetened Beverages by 2026 Instead of a Fixed-Percentage Rate

Starting in 2026, the excise tax on sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) will shift from a fixed percentage-based rate to a sugar-content–linked model.

A tiered volumetric system will be introduced, where the tax applied per liter of an SSB is determined by the amount of sugar it contains per 100 ml — the higher the sugar content, the higher the tax rate per liter.

This new approach aims to incentivize manufacturers to reduce sugar levels in their products and promote healthier dietary choices among consumers. Contact us to learn more details.
